Universal’s Director of Ops, APAC, Sarah Kalmeta, who also serves as one of AsBAA’s Board of Governors, has been nominated for an Icons of Aviation Trailblazer award for her advocacy in leading the Discovery Program. Ms. Sarah Kalmeta is an expert on operations and ground handling throughout the Asia-Pacific region and a passionate advocate for ensuring the future of business aviation. As a member of the Board of Governors at AsBAA, she is heavily involved in the Hong Kong committee and leads AsBAA Discovery, the association’s student and careers chapter aimed at bridging the gap between next generation talent and industry.
Under her leadership, AsBAA Discovery works with educational partners around the region to raise awareness and develop talent for the business aviation and general aviation sector. Kalmeta said, “When I was a child, I dreamt of being an astronaut. From the beginning my eyes were forever turned toward the sky and the wonders it held. NASA’s Discovery mission inspired me and made me believe that nothing is impossible. It was serendipitous that the student chapter of AsBAA was named Discovery and that I was asked to lead the program. Exploration, wonder, excitement – these are foundational characteristics of our industry’s most passionate people, and these people are often the most successful; pioneers leading our industry to discovering new and ever exciting products and transforming how we experience travel”.
Outside of her voluntary role at AsBAA, Ms. Kalmeta, who is based in Hong Kong and is fluent in English and basic Mandarin, is the Regional Director of Operations – APAC at Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc. In this role, she supports the company’s Universal Aviation ground handling locations to ensure the network has the infrastructure, resources and expertise to exceed client expectations.
“Two of the greatest challenges business aviation faces in APAC and the world are access restrictions and fostering future talent to support the region’s growth. Sarah’s passion and enthusiasm for these issues both with Universal and AsBAA has allowed us to ensure the success of our customers’ missions, while also creating a better future for all operators in the region.” – Greg Evans, Chairman, Universal.
