FLYING COLOURS CORP. INCREASES NORTH AMERICAN FOOTPRINT WITH LARGEST EXPANSION YET
15/10/2018

On the eve of this year’s NBAA Flying Colours – booth 1735 – the North American maintenance, repair, overhaul and completions business has announced it is adding more than 140,000 square feet to its North American footprint as it continues its ambitious expansion and embarks on its largest infrastructure growth to date. Plans are currently […]

Plans are currently being finalized for the groundbreaking of a brand-new hangar by the end of fall 2018 at the Peterborough, ON. facility. The additional hangar, the fourth at Flying Colours Peterborough headquarters, is needed to provide additional capacity for completions, refurbishment and heavy maintenance work scopes on large jet airframes.
The purpose-built hangar will be divided into three distinct zones. A new 40,000-square-feet, climate controlled, state-of-the-art paint shop will be added, supplementing the two existing dedicated paint shops. Large enough to accommodate business jets up to Global 7500, Boeing Business Jet or Airbus A220 (formerly known as the Bombardier C Series) size airframes it will fulfill the higher volume of paint jobs passing through the facility. A second area of 40,000 square feet has been designed to enable heavy maintenance and/or interior work on up to four Global 6000-size aircraft to take place simultaneously. Two higher levels will be used for new customer offices, a second dedicated design-center at the facility, storage and general office space. The total office space will cover more than 20,000 square feet bringing the hangar footprint to more than 100,000 square feet in total when it opens in mid-2019.
At the company’s Chesterfield, St. Louis facility a fifth hangar will be inaugurated on 1 December. The 30,000-square-feet area will be large enough to handle up to three parallel large-jet maintenance, avionics upgrades and interior projects at once including Bombardier Global and larger Gulfstream models. The additional capacity dove tails with the expanded interiors and cabinetry workshop that opened in January of this year. Together the shops will support the multiple aircraft projects being undertaken at the KSUS facility. A further 18,000 square feet of customer lounges, office space, and storage area will form the second floor of the facility.
The next expansion phase represents Flying Colours’ largest investment to date and has been driven by the long-term need for increased capacity as customer demand reflects renewed growth in the business aviation sector. The latest aircraft models require high-quality interior monuments for completions, an active pre-owned market has driven a rise in refurbishment demand, and the frequency of heavy maintenance checks has grown as more models become due. An evolving connectivity segment has also stimulated the need for more avionics upgrades across numerous platforms. This has also been augmented by the upcoming ADS-B Out mandate in the North Americas.
When the buildings are complete more than 100 team members will join the family owned business across the two sites. The search for maintenance, interiors and paint expertise will lead the recruitment drive.
“We were literally running out of space to deliver all the services that our clients were requesting, so took the decision to increase our footprint significantly at both of our North American sites,” says Sean Gillespie, Executive VP, Flying Colours Corp. “The business aviation sector is more buoyant than it has been for some time and with our Bombardier ASF status, our breadth of experience working on numerous different aircraft types, and the fact that we can offer a multitude of skills under one roof, so reducing aircraft downtime, is making us very attractive to a wider range of customers.”

StandardAero recently completed two major industry milestones, just in time to celebrate at the 2018 NBAA-BACE event held this year at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.  The company announced the completion of its 20,000th TFE731 turbofan engine scheduled maintenance event on October 2.  On top of that, the 20,000th milestone took place at the company’s new facility, located in Fleetlands U.K. after being selected as the location for StandardAero’s Honeywell TFE731 EMEAI region engine heavy maintenance authorization earlier this year.
Over the four decades that StandardAero has been servicing these engines – the company has completed more scheduled maintenance events than any other independent MRO provider in the world.
In February, StandardAero announced its Honeywell agreement to be the only authorized heavy maintenance facility, located in the EMEAI region, licensed to perform both CZIs and MPIs.  Additionally, StandardAero is authorized to perform line level maintenance on the 36-series APUs for business aviation aircraft operators in the EMEAI region.  The authorization, is a long-term agreement whereby StandardAero anticipates supporting more than 1,500 MPI & CZI engine events over the contract life.  As part of the agreement, StandardAero is standing up Europe-based Mobile Service Teams to provide on-site service to support approximately 600 operators in the region.
“Reaching this milestone is truly historic for StandardAero but even more satisfying that it occurred at our new EMEAI facility,” said Marc Drobny, President of StandardAero Business Aviation.  “I want to thank our team in the UK for making such great progress to stand up our capabilities in the region and invite all EMEAI business aviation operators to visit our shop and meet our team, in person.”
Thus far this year, StandardAero has invested more than $7 million in training, tooling, equipment, inventory and testing to bolster its Fleetlands facility.  Fleetlands is now a critical part of StandardAero’s support for the global TFE731 powered fleet.
Visit StandardAero at Booth 1995 at the Orange County Convention Center during the NBAA2018 – Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition on November 16-18 in Orlando, Florida.

Action at Duncan Aviation’s Provo, Utah, campus is ablur as 70-75 steel erectors, electricians, and concrete and mechanical experts work diligently to ensure Duncan Aviation’s first new-construction MRO maintenance hangar will be ready to open in January 2019.

“It is fun to see everything come together,” says Chad Doehring, Vice President of Operations at Provo. “The hangar service pits have been installed and the entire hangar floor is now in. The fuel farm is on-site and going through the testing and certification stages. Over the next two months, the focus will be to complete the build-out of the first service hangar and the paint shop.”

The building and planning for the new facility goes much farther than bricks and mortar.

“Customers consistently tell us they bring their projects to Duncan Aviation because of our people,” Doehring says. “Our people have knowledge and expertise, are friendly and resourceful, and understand customer service at all levels. Our goal is to carefully plan our staffing to expand this overall feeling, culture and experience to our growing base in Provo.”

To this end, Duncan Aviation has carefully recruited team members from its Lincoln, Battle Creek and other locations for positions at the new Provo facility. With right around 100 team members located in Provo now, the company anticipates having about 180 by second quarter 2019 and 250 by second quarter 2020.

“This melting pot of experience and Duncan Aviation culture blended with talented new team members from outside the company is the recipe to ensuring our customers consistently receive the same high level of experience no matter the Duncan Aviation facility they use,” Doehring says.

For more information, visit Static Display SD18 or visit Duncan Aviation at the Orange County Convention Center at booth #3896 during this year’s NBAA convention from October 16-18. Watch for announcements at www.DuncanAviation.aero/nbaa.

Sonoma Jet Center recently became the first FBO in Northern California and one of a handful in the United States to achieve successful implementation of Stage II of the International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH). IS-BAH Stage II certification demonstrates Sonoma Jet Center’s commitment to safety and innovation for customers, employees, and the public at large.

IS-BAH contains a set of global industry best practices for business aircraft ground handlers and features, at its core, a Safety Management System (SMS). IS-BAH Stage II Certification is the second of three levels of the highest possible safety standards that an FBO can have. This rigorous certification process demands time and dedication as well as a safety culture from top to bottom in the company.

Josh Hochberg, president of Sonoma Jet Center says, “This is a huge achievement by a dedicated team committed to safety. We are very proud of this endorsement of our FBO, safety culture, and processes. And, we want our customers to know that we are making an ongoing investment in safety that only a handful of other companies have done in North America thus far.”

Scott Reisch is a seasoned pilot and trial attorney who flies a Piper Malibu all over the state of Colorado – and sometimes beyond – to make court appearances and meet with clients, saving time and money for his clients as well as his law firm.
“The plane is a time machine,” said Reisch. “I learned to fly because it was something I wanted to do, but the airplane has really turned into a very valuable tool for work.”
Years ago, when Reisch and his family were returning home to Colorado from a trip to Texas, he spotted a small airplane flying the same direction as they were driving – and making much better time. “The plane was flying as the crow flies, while we had to stick to the roads,” said Reisch.
The next day, he went to his local airport to sign up for flying lessons.
Reisch is the founder of the Reisch Law Firm, a personal injury and criminal defense law firm with headquarters in Denver. Reisch and several of the firm’s five attorneys regularly have to travel around the state to appear in court on behalf of their clients.
“A car trip to Telluride, where I sometimes have to go, can easily take six or seven hours, and usually means an overnight stay,” said Reisch. “It’s an hour each way in the Malibu, which saves on travel time fees for our clients and means that we are back home that same night.”
The aircraft, which is hangared at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (BJC), is Reisch’s third airplane, and he hopes to eventually purchase a small turboprop or jet aircraft, to save even more travel time. Reisch will sometimes fly clients or their relatives to a court appearance, and if he is not available, he hires a pilot to fly other attorneys as needed.
“I’ve even flown the opposing counsel on occasion,” added Reisch. “Talk about a captive audience.”

The package will cover Viasat’s Ka-band and dual-band Ka-/Ku-band equipment, inclusive of the Viasat shipset, radome and STC, for all Bombardier Global Express, Global Express XRS, Global 5000 and Global 6000 aircraft.
Through this agreement, operators and other maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) shops of Bombardier Global aircraft can work directly with StandardAero to install Viasat’s in-flight connectivity system on the select named Bombardier models.
“Owners and operators of Bombardier Global aircraft no longer have to wait to install the industry’s fastest, most robust in-flight connectivity system for their business jets—they can install Viasat’s advanced business jet connectivity system today,” said Jerry Goodwin, vice president, Global Network Services, Viasat. “Our in-flight connectivity service is proven to support more passengers and more devices simultaneously through all phases of flight, when performing bandwidth-intensive applications, including accessing virtual private networks, or streaming high-definition video calls, cloud content or live TV entertainment. And with our dual-band solution, operators will have access to more global coverage, redundancy and still have Viasat’s highest-speed Ka-band solution.”
StandardAero will offer Viasat’s most advanced business aviation dual-band, Ku-band and Ka-band shipsets, including the Global Aero Terminal 5510, which will tap into the ViaSat-1, ViaSat-2 and European Ka-band satellite platforms, and will be forward-compatible with Viasat’s future-generation satellite constellation, ViaSat-3—enabling use of the ViaSat-3 capacity with no additional hardware upgrades. ViaSat-3 is an ultra-high capacity satellite platform, which will be comprised of three ViaSat-3 class satellites offering global coverage. Each ViaSat-3 satellite is expected to deliver one terabit per second capacity, which is around the estimated total network capacity of commercial communications satellites in space today.

Clemens Aircraft, a fleet management company located in Benton, Kansas, is nearing completion of their 11th G5000 integrated flight deck upgrade within its managed fleet of Beechjet 400A/Hawker 400XP aircraft. They have completed a comprehensive upgrade for each Beechjet that includes the G5000 integrated flight deck, winglets, as well as new paint and interior.
“After all of these upgrades, the G5000 in the Beechjet provides the best value when compared to other aircraft in its class,” said Dwayne Clemens, owner of Clemens Aircraft. “Additionally, these upgrades significantly expand our operational capability through a combination of benefits such as lower approach minimums because of access to WAAS/LPV approaches, an increase in useful load of over 300 pounds and an overall reduction in operational costs.”
The G5000 integrated flight deck features three high-resolution, 12-inch flight displays with multi-pane capability, allowing pilots to simultaneously view maps, charts, checklists, TAWS, TCAS, flight plan information, weather and more. Two touchscreen display/controllers serve as the primary crew interface for the system, offering an intuitive graphical menu to simplify cockpit tasks.
With the G5000 upgrade, the Beechjet 400A/Hawker 400XP receives a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) rule-compliant Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out solution. It also allows for access to more airports and lower minimums throughout the world through standard PBN/RNP 0.3, radius-to-fix (RF) legs support and LPV/APV approach capability. The G5000 upgrade provides operators with a platform positioned to take advantage of future global airspace modernization applications.
For additional information regarding the G5000 integrated flight deck modernization program for the Beechjet 400A/Hawker 400XP, contact Dave Brown at +1-913-440-1714 or dave.brown@garmin.com.

TAG Farnborough Airport has announced that 17-year-old Réshé Harrison has been awarded the TAG Flying Scholarship 2018 which provides training towards a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL).
The TAG Flying Scholarship is part of the airport’s “Aviation to Education” programme. Now in its 11th year, the programme engages schools and colleges within the local area to inform and educate about aviation. Under the auspices of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots’ scholarship programme, TAG Farnborough Airport grants one young person a scholarship with the aim of supporting individuals who might otherwise not have the necessary resources to gain flying experience and ultimately achieve their PPL. Over the past 11 years, scholarship recipients have progressed to a variety of professional roles within the aviation industry such as commercial airline pilot.
Currently studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering at Kingston College, this year’s scholarship recipient, Réshé, has overcome the enormous challenge of battling leukaemia as a child to pursue his dream of becoming a fully qualified pilot. The defining moment came for a six year old Réshé – in the midst of his treatment for leukaemia – on a special children’s charity flight to Orlando. During a conversation with the Captain of the Boeing 747, Réshé explained that one day he wanted to be just like him to which the Captain responded: “Work hard, be the best and one day I hope to see you in the cockpit”.
Before being awarded the scholarship, Réshé completed a competitive application process, underwent various aptitude tests and an interview before final selection.  He has been training at Redhill Aviation Flight Centre working towards his PPL.
On receiving the scholarship, Réshé said: “I would like to thank TAG Farnborough Airport for providing me with such a fantastic and unique opportunity. Since that memorable day when I was just six years old, I have worked towards my ultimate goal of becoming a professional pilot. The support of the Flying Scholarship has provided me with that vital stepping stone to go on to university to study Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training and has ultimately given me the chance to make my dreams a reality.”
Brandon O’Reilly, CEO TAG Farnborough Airport, said: “I am delighted to award this scholarship to Réshé as he pursues his career in the world of aviation and benefits from the flying experience this scheme offers. We are keen to encourage young people to reach their full potential and are extremely proud to support this through our community engagement.”
