PPG announced that it will supply windshields and cockpit side windows to Dassault Aviation for the new Falcon 6X. This marks the first time PPG will supply flight-deck windows for a Dassault Aviation production program.

The Falcon 6X jet will be the largest and most advanced business jet ever built by Dassault Aviation and the world’s first ultra-widebody business jet. The aircraft will be equipped with uniquely shaped, lightweight glass windshields and cockpit side windows by PPG.

“The Falcon 6X twinjet is designed to achieve a 5,500-nautical-mile range, and PPG’s lightweight windshields will support that requirement while providing the safety and reliability for which PPG transparencies are known,” said Steve Kight, PPG global director, general aviation transparencies. “PPG is pleased to be working with Dassault Aviation on the innovative transparencies for its newest Falcon jet. We completed much of the design work in advance of the program, so we are in a good position to meet Dassault Aviation’s ambitious schedule.”

PPG will produce the windshields and cockpit side windows for the Falcon 6X at its Huntsville, Alabama, plant. The transparencies will comprise three plies of optically clear PPG HERCULITE® II chemically strengthened glass for lightweight strength and reliability. Because the Falcon 6X jet will not be equipped with windshield wipers, PPG SURFACE SEAL® hydrophobic coating on the flight-deck windows will enhance water shedding for visibility.

“While PPG supplies Dassault Aviation with replacement cockpit windows manufactured at the Huntsville facility for Falcon 20 and Falcon 50 business jets, these are the first original-equipment flight-deck windows we are providing to the company for a production aircraft,” Kight noted. “We are excited to be building on this relationship.”

West Star Aviation is pleased to announce that it has acquired hangars at Perryville Regional Airport, (KPCD) in Perryville, MO, and will quickly bring capabilities online as its fourth full-service maintenance facility.
The company closed on its fourth hangar on the airport in late June, expanding their KPCD footprint to over 120,000 sq. ft. in hangar and office space. West Star’s largest hangar at its Perryville location can accommodate multiple large–sized corporate aircraft.
In the coming months, West Star will be adding employees and capabilities as they continue to develop this location to its fourth full-service MRO. West Star currently occupies four hangar facilities at the airport, which includes a 28,800 sq. ft. state-of-the-art paint facility with a downdraft filtration system. This paint facility also has the capacity for large-sized corporate aircraft. Most recently, the company has promoted Kyle French to General Manager to oversee all of Perryville’s operations.

MTU Maintenance Canada celebrated the redelivery of the first V2500 engine for customer IAE International Aero Engines AG (“IAE”) in Vancouver at the end of June. The engine falls under the contract between IAE and MTU last year that sees MTU Maintenance Canada serving V2500 aftermarket customers. The V2500 is the engine that powers the A320ceo family.
“MTU Maintenance performed over one third of all V2500 shop visits worldwide in 2017– making it the number one service provider globally,” says Michael Schreyögg, Chief Program Officer, MTU Aero Engines. “By introducing the line in Canada, we aim to strengthen our market position and grow as the engine family matures into the early 20s.” Helmut Neuper, President and CEO of MTU Maintenance Canada adds: “Seventeen million Canadian dollars have been invested to establish the line in Richmond, British Columbia, by MTU. The MTU Maintenance Canada facility aims to service around 25 V2500 engines this year, ramping up to 40 in 2019.”
MTU Maintenance Canada is the North American member of the MTU Maintenance network of companies, the largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services worldwide. Based in Richmond, British Columbia, the company operates a shop in the immediate vicinity of Vancouver’s international airport where it repairs and overhauls engines and accessories and performs engine tests. In addition to the V2500 engine, MTU’s Canadian affiliate holds all OEM licenses required for the repair and overhaul of GE CF6 series and CFMI CFM56 engines. Alongside accessory repairs, the company also offers its customers so-called Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) management services which play an increasing role in MTU’s service offerings.

Tens of thousands of spectators filled the Royal Parks and the Mall as the 100RAF aircraft from the past century came together in a once-in-a-lifetime flypast above Buckingham Palace, marking the first time since the Second World War victory celebrations of 1946 that such a vast number of aircraft have flown together over London.

PPG (NYSE:PPG) announced that Airbus has qualified PPG DESOTHANE® HD 9008 mica basecoat-clearcoat for applying mica sparkle effects to aircraft liveries. The coatings system offers enhanced repairability as well as improved durability and aesthetics.
The qualification enables airlines to specify PPG Desothane HD 9008 mica basecoat-clearcoat for the liveries on their Airbus aircraft under the same Airbus specifications as the PPG solid-color basecoat-clearcoat system. Coatings application can be as a decorative topcoat system, as a complete paint scheme with PPG DESOPRIME® CF 7049 primer and in a selectively strippable system with F565 intermediate coat over the primer. The corresponding Airbus Industrie Material Specifications are 04-04-025, 04-04-033 and 04-04-037.
PPG Desothane HD 9008 basecoat-clearcoat consists of a pigment-rich basecoat that provides color with less paint than conventional high-solids coatings. Its clearcoat extends service life, improves buffability and achieves a smoother, high-gloss surface that is easier to clean.
For the mica basecoat-clearcoat, PPG developed a three-stage technology, with the mica layer applied over the solid-color basecoat and before the clearcoat. This provides enhanced shimmer compared with two-stage mica basecoat-clearcoat systems, which disperse the mica in the color basecoat.
According to Daniel Bencun, PPG global director, aerospace coatings, the process for repairing the PPG mica coatings system offers significant advantages.
“Combining the high-gloss color vibrancy of a basecoat-clearcoat and distinctive sparkle of mica in an advanced-technology coatings system is a significant achievement for PPG,” Bencun said. “Airbus customers with mica as a design element in their liveries – especially airlines with full mica paint jobs – can now benefit from the maintenance, performance and appearance advantages of PPG’s basecoat-clearcoat.”
Airbus has long used PPG Desoprime CF 7049 primer, which is formulated without chrome as an intentionally added ingredient.
PPG’s global aerospace business offers coatings, sealants, transparencies, packaging and application systems, and transparent armor, as well as chemical management and other services.

StandardAero, in partnership with California-based MRO ACI Jet, recently certified another Honeywell JetWaveTM Ka-band satellite communication system, completing a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for installations on Bombardier Global Express, Global 5000 and Global 6000 Aircraft.
Honeywell’s JetWave system is a popular offering in the world of in-flight connectivity, utilizing Ka-band technology to replicate the speed and performance that consumers are accustomed to in their homes.  StandardAero’s STC provides for installation of the Honeywell JetWave hardware, under a Honeywell Ka radome, along with a Honeywell CNX-900 router.  StandardAero partnered with ACI Jet in San Luis Obispo, CA, to complete the installation.
The STC is now available to all Honeywell dealers.

PPG (NYSE:PPG) announced that it has begun qualification and shop trials for a family of aerospace sealants that are cured on demand using ultraviolet (UV) light, allowing for substantial reductions in process time, waste and costs while increasing efficiency.
Based on PPG PERMAPOL® polymer technology and known in the industry as sealants cured on demand (SCOD), these proprietary sealants cure in seconds with the simple application of UV light, rather than hours or even days required for traditional-cure products. These new sealants are fuel-resistant, offer low shrinkage, are highly flexible and exhibit excellent physical properties.
PPG SCOD products are undergoing evaluation for qualification to the new SAE Aerospace Material Specification (AMS) 3102 written for UV-cured sealants. Several aircraft manufacturers have begun or will soon begin the evaluation and approval process for these products.
“The new UV-cured SCOD family of aerospace sealants based on proprietary PPG Permapol technology represents the next inspired step in aerospace sealant technology – one that promises to provide value, performance and cost savings to our customers,” said Bill Keller, PPG global segment manager, aerospace sealants.
Modern commercial transport and military aircraft use a wide variety of sealants for numerous applications, including coating the wing’s integral fuel tanks for fuel containment, sealing fuselage joints for pressurization, filling depressions in the exterior aircraft structure to achieve a smooth surface and providing corrosion-protection qualities.
Traditionally, these sealants are supplied as chemically cured, two-component materials that can take hours to cure once applied. While this curing process takes place, many assembly operations in the area must be suspended to not disturb the uncured sealant, often limiting production rates and flight-line maintenance. Mixed sealants also have a limited working time in which to be applied, leading to expired sealant being discarded and money wasted. PPG’s new family of UV-cured aerospace sealants can help solve these challenges.
PPG is developing a comprehensive SCOD product line for fillet and butt joint sealing over the entire aircraft, from wing tip to wing tip and nose to tail. The sealants can be provided in either a one- or two-component form. The two-component form allows applicators the option of either curing the sealant chemically in the classic manner or instantly with UV light.
“PPG is most excited about the potential offered by the one-component variant of this technology, which revolutionizes a 60-year-old process in how aircraft are sealed,” Keller said.
While existing two-component materials have limited pot lives, PPG SCOD products will be supplied frozen and can be stored in a freezer for months. When thawed, sealant contained in the cartridge remains useable for up to seven days. This eliminates the need for complicated in-line mixing systems and the feed-line purging required for today’s two-component sealants, which generates additional waste.
A new video by PPG that describes this new technology will be shown at the Farnborough International Airshow at the PPG display in Hall 1 at Stand 1165. PPG aerospace sealant experts will be available to discuss the technology at the airshow July 16-22 in Farnborough, England.
PPG developed the first jet fuel-resistant sealants in the 1950s and has since remained at the forefront in advancing sealant performance.

West Star Aviation is pleased to announce that the Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC), the Brazilian civil aviation authority, has approved West Star’s East Alton (ALN) facility to work on Brazilian registered aircraft through 2020.
This approval is the latest addition to a growing list of authorizations which have allowed West Star to expand business worldwide. West Star will now offer full-service maintenance, installation, inspections and repairs on Brazilian registered aircraft beginning June 2018.

Kopter Group AG has formed a fully owned subsidiary in the US: Kopter North America LLC.

The establishment of this subsidiary is a key first step for Kopter in developing its presence in the US, which represents a significant market for the company.

Kopter North America LLC will be headed by Christian Gras, as CEO – Christian is equally the Executive Vice President Customers at Kopter Group AG – and Larry Roberts, as President Sales, Marketing and Customer Support.

Andreas Löwenstein, CEO of Kopter Group, said at this occasion: “the US is cleary a prime market for our single engine helicopter, which offers the highest standards of safety, performance and comfort, coupled with low operating costs.
