Universal Aviation Mexico, a joint venture between Avemex, and Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc. to provide ground support throughout Mexico, has officially opened its new $3.5 million, 50,000 square-foot hangar on the property of their FBO at Toluca International Airport (MMTO).

“Both based and transient, non-based operators at Toluca have struggled to find parking and hangarage due to shortages in recent years at this already congested airport. That challenge is only exacerbated during high-traffic periods like the annual Mexico City F1 race and American Football games in Mexico City, so we made this investment in this fifth Universal Aviation Mexico hangar at Toluca to meet that growing demand,” said Greg Evans, Chairman, Universal®. “Along with the multi-million-dollar renovation of our state-of-the-art FBO two years ago, our new hangar is recognition of our commitment to supporting our clients’ critical missions at this important destination for business aviation.”

The new hangar, which will predominantly be used use for locally-based operators outside of peak periods or for large-body aircraft arrivals, includes 32,000 square feet built-in office space and 17,200 square feet of storage space. Universal Aviation’s ramp also offers three direct taxiway access points, the most of any FBO at Toluca.

“We built this ‘low-movement hangar’ to meet the parking and hangarage shortages at Toluca without compromising safety by either positioning aircraft extremely close together or having to make excessive movements to get in and out,” said Agustin Lanzagorta, President of Grupo Avemex. “We’ve seen tremendous interest in the new hangar and have already secured many base tenants. We’re excited to now have more capacity to protect our customers’ aircraft and ensure our customers have a safe place to protect them from the extreme Toluca weather.”

Satcom Direct, the business aviation connectivity, software and hardware provider is showcasing its expanding suite of professional training courses to the Latin American business aviation community at LABACE, 14 – 16 August 2018 – Booth 2005.

Following the successful completion in July of the first round of classes designed for local Brazilian pilots SD is now bolstering its offering with the addition of new subjects to the portfolio. The first four-hour workshops, attended by pilots from four local business aviation operators, focused on improving crew understanding of ACARS – Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System – through the SD Flight Deck Freedom® datalink communications service. The inaugural course detailed how to use FDF and ACARS, including FANS 1A, to optimize situational awareness to heighten security and safety.

All materials are delivered in Portuguese to encourage pilot engagement with, and better understanding of, the content. Future pilot courses are likely to cover the use of electronic flight logs, flight planning tools, and flight data analysis. As the curriculum develops SD is working with the Brazilian National Agency of Civil Aviation to have the educational program formally recognized. It is anticipated this will be achieved by the end of 2018.

“Understanding the full power of our flight deck offerings can really enhance the pilot experience so we’ve designed our local courses to provide useful, practical and relevant information. The courses, which are free of charge to our customers, also improve a pilot’s career profile and raise industry standards,” explains Managing Director, SD Brazil, Ewerton Libanio. “Our approach is to educate and empower our colleagues by delivering a range of technology knowledge. The international accredited courses are available for all the industry, you don’t have to be an SD customer, so if you’re in the industry, and want to be educated about connectivity, SD is here to help.”

AIR BP PRESENTS ITS CARBON OFFSETTING PROGRAM FOR BIZAV AT LABACE

Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and services supplier, will highlight its pioneering carbon offset program for business aviation in Brazil at LABACE, the largest business aviation conference and exhibition in Latin America. Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and services supplier, will highlight its pioneering carbon offset program for business aviation in Brazil at LABACE, the largest business aviation conference and exhibition in Latin America. Through this program Air BP offsets carbon emissions, via BP Target Neutral, related to the use of aviation fuel supplied to its customers.

This initiative supports the aviation industry’s ambitious targets set by ICAO of achieving carbon neutral growth by 2020 and a 50 percent cut in total emissions by 2050, relative to 2015.

“We are very proud to present such an important initiative during LABACE. We are offering our business aviation customers the opportunity to proactively work towards achieving the industry’s ambitious carbon reduction targets by offsetting the emissions from the aviation fuel used in their flights, as part of their wider carbon management programs” says Ricardo Paganini, General Manager, Air BP South America.

The program is in line with BP’s commitment to achieving a lower carbon future; addressing the dual challenge of meeting the increasing energy needs the world demands while at the same time working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“In addition to finding ways to reduce our own carbon emissions, we work closely with our customers to develop innovative offers that support them in the transition to a lower carbon future,” continues Paganini. Air BP’s carbon offsetting offer in Brazil complements its own carbon neutral into-plane fueling operations at 250 directly operated locations around the world, including a number of locations in Brazil such as Sao Paulo Guarulhos and Rio de Janeiro Galeao international airports.

In June, Air BP announced its first participant in the program in Brazil. The executive aircraft management company Avantto saw in the initiative the opportunity to take another step in their own sustainability journey and offer their customers an additional benefit – have the carbon emissions from the aviation fuel used in their flights offset.

This builds on initiatives by Air BP in other regions, such as the announcement in April of their collaboration with leading on-demand jet charter marketplace Victor in a carbon-offset programme for private flying in Europe, as well as the ability for operators and pilots who use the RocketRoute MarketPlace app to offset the carbon associated with their fuel purchases.

Projects within the BP Target Neutral portfolio have been assessed on the basis of their contribution to reducing carbon emissions and their potential to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, for example, through their potential to help improve livelihoods for the communities they are based in through various educative, economic and social benefits.

Aerion, the leader in supersonic flight, will hold a recruiting event for highly experienced program directors and subsystem engineers on September 21 in Los Angeles. The company is recruiting talent at the director and lead engineer levels for the AS2 supersonic aircraft.

“We are looking for creative, brilliant, passionate, and collaborative pioneers who want to join with us to revolutionize global mobility through high-speed flight,” said Tom Vice, Aerion President and Chief Operating Officer.

Vice noted that the Aerion team is growing rapidly as the company heads into detailed design, systems test, production, and first flight.

Aerion is developing the AS2 supersonic business jet in collaboration with GE, which is developing the first new civil supersonic engine in more than 50 years, and with Lockheed Martin, a leader in military supersonic flight.

Aerion plans to make the first flight of its AS2 supersonic business jet in 2023 and make a supersonic crossing of the Atlantic in October of that year—the 20-year anniversary of the last flight of the Concorde.

“The AS2 is the first in a series of increasingly capable and efficient supersonic aircraft, both business jets and airliners, that will revolutionize travel, create closer personal connections around the world, and drive global commerce,” said Vice. “I cannot think of a greater mission, or more stimulating environment in which to work within the aerospace industry. We invite likeminded engineers to join with us in this great enterprise.”

Satcom Direct, the business aviation connectivity, software and hardware provider, has confirmed its first Jet ConneX installation for Deer Jet subsidiary, Hongkong Jet. The ultra-high-speed Ka-band service, powered by Inmarsat’s Global Xpress satellite constellation, is being supplied to a privately-owned Gulfstream G650ER, managed and maintained by Hongkong Jet.

Installed at Gulfstream’s Long Beach, CA. facility and activated by SD in early summer, the system delivers unrivalled cabin access to the highest data speeds available to business aircraft in the sky. “The principal runs a large, international Chinese conglomerate so the ability to use voice and text services, download and email documents, and surf the web, are fundamental to his business. His family often travels with him and they want to stream video, watch favorite TV series, and big sporting events. The need to deliver constant, reliable, secure connectivity is essential. With Jet ConneX installed the cabin is truly a home from home, as well as an office in the air,” says Mike Walsh, chief commercial officer, Hongkong Jet.

The Satcom Direct Router, SDR®, seamlessly delivers the high-speed connectivity throughout the G650ER cabin to all passenger devices. In addition, data integrity is maintained by the SD suite of cyber security software solutions which while managed by the SDR, are supplemented by certified SD experts, to proactively mitigate potential threats and block intrusion attempts in real-time.

“The data security offering, the standard of SD global customer service, and the ability to respond 24/7 to resolve potential issues, played a significant part in our decision to appoint them as the Ka-band provider. Our clients expect us to maintain the aircraft to the highest standards and we rely on SD to meet and exceed those expectations in terms of connectivity,” said Denzil White, chief executive officer, Hongkong Jet.

“We have supplied connectivity to the G650ER for some time and upgrading to the Jet ConneX offering was a natural next step to fulfil the owners growing connectivity needs. SD is the world’s largest reseller of Jet ConneX and we have exceptional experience in managing, monitoring and delivering the solution. This know-how adds significant value to our customers and ensures we are able to provide enhanced customer support levels, as well as pro-active data security,” said SD President, David Greenhill.

The latest Ka-band upgrade bolsters the existing relationship between SD and Hongkong Jet and is the first in a number of confirmed connectivity upgrades SD will supply to the management company fleet over the next twelve months.
