West Star Aviation has launched a maintenance event portal for their customers as the latest tool to stay connected while their aircraft is in work.

The new portal was driven by the input of West Star’s customers and will make communication between customers and West Star quicker and more efficient. The user-friendly portal makes it easy for customers to approve squawks online, provides approval status, labor, parts, service and other squawk charges, connects customers and lead technicians, and allows technicians to supply specific detailed photos regarding squawks.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver yet another tool for our customers to stay connected with the world-class experience of the West Star Aviation team. Our objective was to use customer input in shaping the development to ensure it included all the features and capabilities they find useful and provide a quicker and more efficient way for our customers to connect with our team,” said Matt Vogel, Manager of IT for West Star Aviation.

Avfuel announced a significant milestone in its sustainable fuels initiative as it enters into an agreement with Gevo, Inc. – a leading next generation biofuels company – effective July 1, 2018. With the agreement, Avfuel becomes Gevo’s exclusive aviation fuel distributor of the sustainable alternative jet fuel portion of Gevo’s renewable hydrocarbon products to business aviation and its entire portfolio of customers.

Avfuel has been a leader in the field of alternative aviation fuels since the formation of Avfuel Technology Initiatives Corporation in January 2012.

Craig Sincock, owner, president and CEO of Avfuel said, “As a leader in the global supply of aviation fuel and services, we have a social responsibility to make sustainable alternative jet fuel a reality in the marketplace. Our agreement with Gevo is a notable component in our overall strategy to support our industry’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainability to mitigate its effect on climate change.”

Sincock remarked that the agreement with Gevo will help the company meet the demand of its customers for a low-carbon, alternative jet fuel, filling a gap in the industry’s supply chain.

For Gevo, the agreement is an important step in its efforts to move forward and develop a large-scale hydrocarbon facility that is expected to have production capacity of approximately 10-12 million gallons per year, from which SAJF would be supplied to Avfuel. Once the larger Gevo production facility is constructed and in production, Avfuel may purchase up to 1,000,000 gallons of the concentrated SAJF per year, which would equate to many millions of gallons of finished ASTM D1655 jet-fuel product when blended with conventional jet fuel.  Initially, Gevo will supply SAJF to Avfuel from its smaller-scale hydrocarbon processing facility it operates in Silsbee, Texas, in partnership with South Hampton Resources, Inc.

The new agreement is a product, in part, of the dedication of Avfuel Technology Initiatives’ team. The operation’s front runner—Keith Sawyer, manager of alternate fuels for Avfuel—dedicates his time leading all aspects of evaluating the sustainable alternative jet fuel market and its suppliers while representing Avfuel within the environmental and fuel supply chain groups associated with GAMA, NBAA, NATA and IBAC.

Most recently, Sawyer played a significant role in the development of May 2018’s Business Aviation Guide: To the Use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF) –released at this year’s EBACE. The guide serves as a helpful resource for information as the industry prepares to accept the new fuel into its mainstream marketplace. And while the guide talks about the industry’s efforts to bring SAJF to market, Avfuel now closely follows its release by putting this plan to action with the Gevo agreement, helping aviation meet its commitments and obligations in the years to come as a more environmentally friendly industry.

“Gaining reliable access to a product that’s currently in limited supply was an important benchmark for our alternative fuel initiative,” said Sincock. “We now turn our attention to infrastructure and logistics. “Harness the Power of Big Data” proclaimed the signs throughout the InterContinental Berlin. Close to 500 attendees from leading airlines, air travel and trade experts the world over came to Germany’s capital for the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Aviation Data Symposium, June 19-20.  Everyone wants to know how to leverage the vast amount of data generated on an aircraft. APiJET believes it has a key solution. A demonstration proved its point.

APiJET offered a case study in improving operational efficiency at a luncheon on day two of the symposium. APiJET Chief Executive Officer John Schramm and Chief Commercial Officer Tom Gibbons spoke about their new software-based data service, a joint venture between Aviation Partners and iJet Technologies. They put it to the test by conducting a live demonstration, showcasing launch customer Icelandair. It has fully deployed APiJET’s data service across its full fleet of Boeing 757-200s, 757-300s and 767-300ERs. It will be on the airline’s new 737 MAX when it enters service this year.

“It’s not a coincidence that Icelandair is our first full-fleet customer or the partner for our first live demo,” Schramm says. “Icelandair’s flattened hierarchy and 30-aircraft fleet enable it to act swiftly. It’s an innovator ready to embrace positive change.”

Putting Transformation to the Test
Schramm and Gibbons used an Icelandair aircraft on the ramp at SeaTac (SEA) Seattle, Washington in the United States to show how their service creates Smart Aircraft™ that support smart operations in real-time, anywhere in the world. For example, while airlines have ample aircraft data and an organizational commitment to process improvement, basic problems recur too often causing unnecessary cost and delay. These include common issues such as auxiliary power units (APUs) that continue to run needlessly, or an inability to get information about required consumable such as low-crew ‎O2 prior to preflight.

For the demonstration, attendees were able to log into a publicly available URL to see APiJET’s telematics app. On their individual devices they could then watch engine and APU starts and running as well as alerts appear for items like low-crew ‎O2. They could also witness an APU runtime alert. They also watched an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) exceedance alert, which in real life could then result in immediate action. A review and discussion of these and other examples elicited robust audience participation.

How the APiJET Smart Aircraft™ System Works
Proprietary APiJET business-logic modules called Actors™ analyze real-time data on the aircraft and convert it into critical information that people can act on in real time. Actors apply logic to know when and how to deliver data from the aircraft to applications that alert the right people as needed across operations: ground, flight, maintenance, administration and even finance. Actors create a configurable feedback loop between ground analytics and the aircraft. Data transforms into insight and, using APiJET or third-party applications, is presented to the people who need it.

An Analytics Provider Positioned to Serve 
APiJET’s open-architecture platform runs on a variety of on-aircraft server hardware, ingests data in multiple formats, runs APiJET Actor analytics and accesses any available IP communication link. The offboard data platform aggregates aircraft data, connects to ground-based applications and analytics via standard APIs, and integrates with corporate backend systems. This data and application open platform positions APiJET for maximum responsiveness to airlines when third-party partners present solutions ripe for integration any airline requires.

“APiJET is different than anything else seen at this conference,” says Gibbons. “We started with airlines’ key operational challenges and recurring issues then worked backward to the technology solution. That led us to an open-architecture model that works with real-time data to integrate the aircraft into all operations to drive efficiency and savings on every flight, every day.”

London Biggin Hill and Associated Aircraft Group (AAG), the premier executive helicopter company, announced the launch of the New York Heli Shuttle, establishing even closer links between the US and UK business capitals.

Industry-leading AAG, which has been operating for more than 25 years, has the largest fleet of Sikorsky S-76® helicopters in the northeast United States. The company will run the six-minute Heli Shuttle transfer from London Biggin Hill’s sister airport, Teterboro, directly to Manhattan’s East 34th Street Heliport.

German Special Mission Operator FAI rent-a-jet AG has expanded its fleet of managed aircraft with the addition of a fifth Global Express (S/N 9084). This brings FAI’s total fleet to 25, including its 10 managed aircraft.

In addition to the five Bombardier Global Express jets, FAI currently operates five Challenger 604s, 12 Learjet 60s, one Learjet 55, one Premier 1A and a King Air 350. All Bombardier aircraft are maintained by FAI Technik.

The new Global Express will be German registered and operated on behalf of a corporate client. It will be based at FAI’s corporate headquarters in Nuremberg following a full cabin refurbishment and new exterior paint undertaken by FAI’s growing MRO subsidiary, FAI Technik GmbH. This project marks FAI Technik’s third Global Express full cabin refurbishment in just six months. It is anticipated that the project will be complete by mid-November when the aircraft will be available for charter.

Siegfried Axtmann, FAI Aviation Group Chairman, comments: “We are very pleased to welcome a fifth Global Express to our managed fleet. Through our management contracts we provide value for aircraft owners and offer charter clients a diverse fleet from which to choose. We are delighted to be undertaking another full cabin Global refurbishment marking yet another major project for FAI Technik this year. We are seeing growing demand in our MRO business which is proving to be increasingly successful following an outstanding 2017.”

RUAG Aviation is now also approved for the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of civil helicopters and propeller aircraft registered in Russia. This is an extension to the existing approvals RUAG holds for business jets issued by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) in 2016 and includes helicopters and propeller aircraft within the standard RUAG type ratings portfolio. The extension specifies RUAG MRO facilities in Switzerland.

“This certification allows us to offer our Russia based customers full MRO and engineering support across their aircraft portfolios,” states Markus Mayer, Regional Sales Director Europe, RUAG Aviation. “At the same time, it also confirms to our current business jets customers that they can continue to rely on prompt aircraft availability and optimized downtimes for their helicopter and propeller aircraft as well. We are keen to extend this trust.”

Dedicated facilities for the newly included aircraft platforms are maintained at the RUAG Aviation sites at Sion, Lugano-Agno and Locarno, Switzerland. More information on the company’s full type ratings portfolio are available on the RUAG Aviation microsites for helicopterspropeller aircraft and business jets. 

RUAG holds Authorized Service Center status from the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for all of the newly approved types. In addition to aircraft MRO, customers are able to take advantage of services that include component MRO, avionics and cockpit upgrades and cabin refurbishment, as well as airframe services for helicopters.

Bell Helicopter announced at the Future of Transportation World Conference a newly formed collaboration with Safran on the development of innovative hybrid electric power system solutions to support Bell’s vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft concept.

Jet Aviation’s maintenance facility in Vienna has recently received EASA Part-145 approval for the Bombardier Learjet 60 aircraft. The company began its first 120-month inspection on a Turkish-based Learjet 60 earlier in June.

With this approval, Jet Aviation’s maintenance facility in Vienna is authorized to support the Bombardier Learjet 60 with line and base maintenance services up to and including the 120-month inspection.

“We strive to meet the business aviation service requirements of our customers when and where they need them,” says Hakan Tin, managing director of Jet Aviation’s MRO and FBO facility in Vienna. “As a mid-size, medium-range business jet, the Learjet 60 is a popular model in Europe and this approval provides much-needed maintenance support to aircraft owners and operators throughout the region.”

Jet Aviation Vienna was founded in September 2014 when Jet Aviation entered agreements with GATE V and FAME, the previous MRO and FBO service providers at Vienna International airport. From a newly constructed 4,000 square meter hangar facility, the company operates a Cessna Authorized Service Center that provides scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to Cessna Citation aircraft, in addition to off-site AOG services. Jet Aviation Vienna also supports line and base maintenance and AOG services for Bombardier Learjet 60 and Challenger 300/350/604/605 aircraft, as well as line maintenance for Bombardier Learjet 45; Challenger 650; Global 5000/6000, Global Express and Global Express XRS series aircraft; and the Gulfstream GV-SP series. Diamond status is the highest safety award to be presented by the EBAA to member companies operating business aircraft that surpass 50 years, or over 100,000 hours, of safe flying. Such recognition highlights TAG Aviation Europe’s ongoing commitment to making safety a number one priority.

Blackhawk Modifications’ subsidiary for government and military sales division, Vector-Hawk Aerospace (VHA), has teamed with Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) to offer the Blackhawk XP67A Engine+ Upgrade Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) Kit for the Beechcraft King Air 350ER. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently approved Blackhawk Modifications’ XP67A Engine+ Upgrade for the aircraft at takeoff weights up to 17,500 pounds maximum allowable takeoff weight (MTOW), significantly increasing the weight capability and horsepower output for special mission applications.

“This after-market, system-of-systems approach, has been developed specifically for special mission applications,” said Tim Owings, executive vice president of SNC’s Integrated Mission Systems (IMS) business area. “The Mission Enhancement Kit provides users with the most capable aircraft available, providing greater usable power, allowing for increased mission payloads and significantly longer loiter times, while providing increased safety and reduced risk throughout the range of operations and mission locations. It is mission endurance, safety and options combined into one solution.”

The XP67A will provide a 25-30 percent increase in power, which translates into improved climb and cruise performance for King Air 350ER aircraft, especially on hot days at high-altitudes. Although the PT6A-67A will produce a 400 thermodynamic SHP increase over the stock PT6A-60A, the Blackhawk engine will actually reduce the overall weight of the aircraft by about 18 pounds.

“We are very excited about the XP67A upgrade for the King Air 350ER,” said Jim Allmon, president and CEO of Blackhawk Modifications. “The new Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67A upgrade gives the aircraft an amazing increase in performance, especially for aircraft operated in Special Missions roles at 17,500 lbs. gross weight. These aircraft are often outfitted with ISR pods, antennas and camera balls in a high temperature region of the world, possibly in a hostile environment. The mission is often limited by the lack of second segment climb performance produced by the stock PT6A-60A engines, which inhibits the amount of fuel the aircraft can carry. With our new XP67A upgrade, we meet that mission requirement at the max gross weight enabling Special Missions operators to use the 350ER to its full mission potential. It’s a true game changer!”
