Helicopter Association International (HAI) announced that Jonathan “JR” Roebuck, remote access project manager for Lifeflight of Maine and MedComm, is the 2018 winner of HAI’s Salute to Excellence Airbus Helicopters Golden Hour Award. The award will be presented at HAI’s Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner at HAI HELI-EXPO 2018 in Las Vegas.
Roebuck is being honored for his work in the creation of the Remote Access Project. Quickly locating and evacuating critically ill and injured patients in the remote areas of Maine is essential to survival. With an extensive Atlantic shoreline, hundreds of coastal islands, dense forests, mountains, and extreme temperature, LifeFlight of Maine operates in one of the most complex aviation environments in the country. In many cases, it previously took up to eight hours for a patient to reach a hospital. Roebuck oversaw the creation of more than 120 remote access landing zones (LZs), all on private land, that provide sites where helicopters can land to assist in rescue operations. In dire situations, minutes literally make a difference between life and death, and the Remote Access Project LZs provide helicopters with space to land in remote areas.
The importance of the LZs was proven during the rescue of an injured snowmobiler. The patient, a woman, had crashed her snowmobile into a 40-foot ravine and sustained critical injuries. Following the 911 call, responders dispatched a helicopter to the nearest Remote Access Project LZ, changing the destination during flight as more information became available. The LifeFlight of Maine helicopter landed just 50 yards from the patient, carrying vital emergency supplies. This would not have been possible if it were not for the strategically placed Remote Access Project LZ. Flight nurses treated the patient during the flight to the hospital. The patient survived the horrific ordeal, and has returned to work and snowmobiling.
The award will be presented at the annual Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner during HAI HELI-EXPO 2018. HAI HELI-EXPO®, the world’s largest helicopter trade show and exhibition, will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, North and Central Halls, in Las Vegas, February 26 to March 1, with the Exhibit Hall open February 27 to March 1.

SmartSky 4G LTE DEMONSTRATION FLIGHTS DELIVER UNMATCHED SPEEDS

In conjunction with the rollout of its 4G LTE-based network, SmartSky Networks recently enabled multiple subject matter experts to experience, firsthand, the unmatched power of its patented inflight connectivity during flights on its Cessna Citation Excel in the skies above Las Vegas. In conjunction with the rollout of its 4G LTE-based network, SmartSky Networks recently enabled multiple subject matter experts to experience, firsthand, the unmatched power of its patented inflight connectivity during flights on its Cessna Citation Excel in the skies above Las Vegas. A number of OEMs, MROs, potential partners and Early Bird customers attending the National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) attempted to push the system to its limits, and in the process, learned that SmartSky 4G LTE is the only system capable of delivering multi-Gigabyte per hour data rates inflight, bi-directionally and with low latency, effectively redefining what it means to be able to stream, chat and text in real-time onboard a business jet.

“I experienced how SmartSky enables a strong level of productivity on a plane with a sizable passenger load,” says Scott Brooks, Director of Avionics Solutions for Pentastar Aviation. “It gives you the ability to pull PowerPoint presentations to the aircraft, conduct video-streaming calls without latency, buffering or interruptions to service. The SmartSky system will be a game changer for business aviation, allowing companies that depend on being able to conduct business while in the air the ability to do so efficiently, regardless of the amount of passengers on board.”

A comprehensive analysis of the data operations during the demonstration flights confirmed SmartSky 4G LTE’s unrivaled speed and capacity. Over three days, passengers on 12 flights experienced:
• Multi-GB per hour actual data throughput consistently on each flight.
• Actual peak speeds well in excess of 10 Mbps, with individually run speed tests showing high multi-Mbps bidirectional data rates, as well.
• Average return link traffic representing nearly 25 percent of the data, with one flight pushing 46 percent of its data off the plane. No other inflight connectivity network supports these crucially needed ratios to run the popular applications customers expect to use. Without SmartSky 4G LTE’s return link and low latency, customers are limited to the few applications other networks support.
• Average of more than 50 seamless beam handovers per flight, proving the most difficult engineering aspect of the system works, and demonstrating the system’s inherent scalability.

SmartSky demonstrated capabilities previously difficult or impossible to consistently achieve on either the incumbent’s ATG network or new satellite systems, such as conducting a live WebEx, or quickly sending large PowerPoint files, all while other onboard passengers were doing multiple streaming sessions. The innovative beamforming power of the network enables bi-directional live communications, at speeds that match Wi-Fi on the ground.

Oriens Aviation, the exclusive British Isles Pilatus Centre, has reinforced its commitment to the world’s best-selling single engine turboprop (SET), the Pilatus PC-12 and the growing SET commercial operations’ market in Europe by acquiring Avalon Aero’s business aviation MRO facility at London Biggin Hill Airport.
The business will be formally renamed and inaugurated as Oriens Aviation Limited effective immediately, with a view to becoming the principal authorised PC-12 Service Centre in the UK by 29th January, 2018.   (Oriens’ activity extends to an agreement with Goodwood Engineering, who will act as a satellite service centre).
Oriens will also have the expertise, as a result of the acquisition, to support other aircraft types for all line and base maintenance activity. These include:
• Cessna 421/550/551/560
• Hawker Beechcraft BAE 125 Series 1000
• Piaggio P180 Avanti
The deal between the owner of Avalon and the Oriens Aviation Board was ratified on 1st December, 2017, including the transfer of the existing Avalon Aero lease on its 18,000 sq ft hangar.  Ahead of the deal Oriens appointed an additional member of its senior management team in October 2017 to work alongside the existing seven-strong team which Oriens is absorbing.
Newly appointed Director of Engineering Dave Plumpton brings significant aviation and strong customer support experience from the challenging airline and VIP aircraft environment for almost 40 years.  Steve Westran from Avalon Aero will work alongside him and continue to be responsible for the daily operations of the hangar and maintenance services.
“We are delighted to have ratified this purchase and further grow our relationship with Pilatus Aircraft, which first began in early 2015,” commented Oriens Aviation CEO Edwin Brenninkmeyer.   “Expanding our offering means we can further assist new customers in helping them plan and budget for their maintenance support, provide technical record keeping on the PC-12 and offer hangarage too.   The ability to offer line and base maintenance complements the support we currently provide our customers.”
Avalon’s founder and Chairman John Glancey had been seeking to exit the business aviation support arena after 17 years at Biggin Hill and concentrate activity at Cranfield Airport, where Avalon supports line and base maintenance for the BAe 146 family.
“We are very pleased that the Avalon business at Biggin Hill is being passed to Oriens Aviation.  The PC -12 and in the future, the Pilatus PC-24, newly EASA and US FAA certificated, are an excellent fit for the existing facility and we are particularly pleased that the core of loyal Avalon engineers have been trained on the PC-12 and will be stay on under the Oriens banner.”

In September Aero-Dienst Nuremberg has completed the first of three Dassault Falcon 7X C inspections. Intensive planning and the thorough performance of the first two consecutive C inspections guarantee the experienced Falcon operator and long-term customer Shell a high degree of fleet availability. A third C-inspection is now scheduled for another 7X operator at the beginning of 2018.

Aero-Dienst used the downtime to carry out several tasks in parallel: “In addition to classic cabin and cockpit overhauls, we installed a quick access recorder (QAR) based on a new STC”, says Thomas Opelt, Aero-Dienst’s Maintenance Avionics Manager.

The aircraft has undergone extensive modifications such as the implementation of a new comprehensive Demo Service Bulletin for the fuel tank. The top-class and highly experienced Aero-Dienst team plays out its strengths especially in the more demanding tasks, such as work on ‘restricted areas’ (fuel tank). “We do this professionally and to the highest possible quality standards. And this includes the strict HSSE requirements (Health, Safety, Security, Environment), ensuring that we discharge our obligations as a responsible employer”, confirms Florian Heinzelmann, Dassault Maintenance Manager at Aero-Dienst.

For Aero-Dienst it is always top priority to adhere to the planned servicing schedule so that customers can make best possible use of their fleet. That is why the full-service provider from Nuremberg started detailed inter-departmental planning involving Maintenance Planning, Design & Modification and Avionics as early as three months before the Falcon 7X arrived.

Especially with complex projects such as this one, Aero-Dienst appreciates the outstanding cooperation with the manufacturer Dassault. “Basically, all three of the participating partners, Shell, Dassault and Aero-Dienst, benefit from the direct and open communication that is required to carry out this event successfully and to the customer’s full satisfaction”, concludes Florian Heinzelmann.

AIR BP SPONSORS NEW COLLECTIONS CARE TECHNICIAN AT RAF MUSEUM

Air BP has announced the sponsorship of the new Collections Care Technician (CCT) post at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum, London. The sponsorship is a vitally important and integral contribution […]

Air BP has announced the sponsorship of the new Collections Care Technician (CCT) post at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum, London. The CCT role involves the upkeep of the RAF’s heritage collection of over 100 aircraft from WWI and WWII, including the Spitfire and Lancaster. The sponsorship is a vitally important and integral contribution for the RAF Museum, which takes on even greater emphasis next year (2018) as the London site undergoes a major transformation coinciding with the centenary of the Royal Air Force.

Air BP’s co-operation with the RAF builds on a relationship of eight decades, which started with Air BP providing fuel to the RAF’s bi-planes. “We recognise the importance of the CCT role at the RAF Museum and by extension we are pleased to be supporting the Centenary programme. BP’s education programme in the UK is all about inspiring young people to gain a better understanding of how important the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) are for our industry and for their futures. Sponsoring aviation roles like this one and our Sterling Pilot PPL (Private Pilot’s Licence) scholarships demonstrates how Air BP is bringing this education agenda to life in the aviation industry,” said Elena Melia, general manager, Air BP UK and France.

The CCT role supports the museum by providing critical inspection, maintenance, movement and repair of the Museum’s aircraft, marine craft and vehicles. The CCT embarked on his engineering training at RAF Hendon under an apprentice programme led by the Museum’s senior RAF technician. As his role evolves he will also be able to call on the support of Neil Frances, operations manager, Air BP UK and France, to provide advice and technical assistance.

“We are hugely grateful for Air BP’s involvement,” said RAF Museum CEO, Maggie Appleton. “Corporate sponsorship is really important to us because the RAF Centenary programme not only covers a major refurbishment of the site but also includes a digital project, My RAF Story. It also includes initiatives aimed at helping young people access skills and training for an aviation career plus the new aircraft collection. The total investment commitment is £25.6 million. Without sponsorship it just wouldn’t happen.”

The collections care technician commented: “The majority of the aircraft here are static exhibitions and they require constant maintenance. Many young people may not be familiar with these aircraft, but in 10 years’ time when the number of veterans drops, these exhibitions will be crucial to tell the stories.”

Air BP has supported the RAF since the early 1930s. There is a record in the company’s 1927 Annual Report of supplying fuel to RAF aircraft, including a twin-engined Vickers Victoria which escorted an inaugural Imperial Airways’ flight through the Middle East with the Air Minister on board.

The transformed London Museum will welcome visitors to discover a new green heart of the community in Colindale, reflecting the Historic RAF Hendon Airfield. Innovative new galleries will explore the first 100 years of the RAF, its role today and invite visitors to imagine its future contribution and technology. It will also feature a new dedicated learning centre with significant STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning programmes.

PWI announced their new AIC partnership with Rose Aircraft Services, a premier FBO out of Arkansas.
Operating out of Mena, Arkansas, Rose Aircraft has decades of experience in aircraft maintenance, as well as interior and exterior refurbishment and completion. They repaint over 150 aircraft a year for organizations like Children’s Mercy. Rose Aircraft has a large pool of suppliers that allows them to offer their customers a wide variety of aftermarket choices for their aircraft.
“Rose Aircraft Services is a great company and we are proud to partner with them,” says Robi Lorik, President of PWI. “We’re thrilled to have this chance to get even more lights on planes and, with Rose Aircraft’s help, we aim to do just that.”
The products that will be offered by Rose Aircraft include PWI’s latest LED reading lights: the 1495, the 303, and 1308. The entire reading light selection features PWI-exclusive heat-reducing technology that allows the lights to run cooler than incandescents and competitors’ LED products. PWI reading lights have a vastly increased lifespan from their incandescent counterparts, as well as a brighter and more directed light for better illumination.
PWI’s line of LED cabin lighting retrofits for King Air series’ 300, 200, 100, and 90 will be offered as well. These retrofits are “plug ‘n play” style, so they are designed to be simply swapped out for the existing lighting fixtures and power supplies. This removes the need to remove the interior or rewire the aircraft.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY (CA) SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT DEPUTIES RECEIVE HAI’S SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE MD HELICOPTERS LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARD

Helicopter Association International (HAI) announced that Riverside County (CA) Sheriff’s Department Deputies Eric Bashta and Jerry Osterloh are the 2018 recipients of the Salute to Excellence MD Helicopters Law Enforcement Award. The officers will receive the award at HAI’s Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner at HAI HELI-EXPO 2018 in Las Vegas.
On the night of Jan. 11, 2017, Osterloh and Bashta responded to a call for assistance by a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer who had stopped a suspected DUI/reckless driver. As the helicopter approached the scene, Tactical Flight Officer Osterloh observed the driver remove a rifle from the cab of his pickup truck and begin firing at the patrol officer and his vehicle.
Osterloh immediately broadcasted a call for assistance on the CHP as the suspect emptied an entire magazine, returned to the truck to reload, and fired additional rounds into the driver’s door. He then returned to the vehicle and fled. The CHP officer radioed that he was uninjured, adding that the driver also had a woman and two children in the truck.
Bashta and Osterloh pursued the truck, keeping the helicopter’s spotlight trained upon it and broadcasting its location, speed, and direction over the radio. Osterloh observed the driver continuing to fire the rifle at pursuing officers, so patrol cars backed away appropriately. But Bashta and Osterloh continued to pursue in their helicopter. The suspect left the freeway and entered a suburban neighborhood, stopping in front of a residence. The driver then exited the vehicle and prepared an ambush for pursuing ground officers, firing at the arriving units. Using the FLIR camera, Osterloh directed SWAT officers toward the suspect’s location.
At that point, the suspect began firing at the helicopter orbiting 600 feet overhead, shooting 60-80 rounds at the deputies. The deputies held position, circling the suspect, and continued to broadcast his actions and location. A second police aviation unit arrived (from the Riverside Police Department), and Bashta coordinated their flight operations as Osterloh kept watch on the suspect.
The suspect entered the home, then came back outside repeatedly, seeking officers to shoot. Osterloh’s updates over the radio allowed officers on the ground to advance safely. After approximately 30 minutes, a SWAT deputy witnessed the suspect exit the building and engaged him, ending the threat.
Law enforcement officers believe the suspect intended this to be a murder/suicide. Due to the efforts of Bashta and Osterloh, no officers or members of the public were injured, and the suspect’s girlfriend and children were also uninjured.
The award will be presented at the annual Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner during HAI HELI-EXPO 2018. HAI HELI-EXPO®, the world’s largest helicopter trade show and exhibition, will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Feb. 26 – March 1, with the Exhibit Hall open Feb. 27 – March 1. Falcon Aviation is celebrating the completion of its first anniversary at its FBO in the VIP Terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport (Dubai South) with the news that it has been awarded International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH) certification.
The accreditation was received by the company on 30th November following a third-party audit by IBAC, the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC).  The endorsement underlines to the wider business aviation industry that Falcon Aviation follows a voluntary code of best safety practice for FBOs.
Congratulating the management team on the award Terry Yeomans, Programme Director for IS-BAH, commented: “We are very pleased that the industry standards have been successfully implemented through to Stage I registration at the Falcon Aviation station at DWC and trust that the team will continue their commitment to ground handling safety as a core value in their service provision to the business aviation community.”
“We are delighted with this recognition as it has been a priority for us this year as we build up our activity in Dubai to mirror our Abu Dhabi Al Bateen Executive Airport performance,” said Falcon Aviation COO Capt Raman Oberoi.  This means we can move into the New Year with a ringing industry endorsement of inhouse handling excellence.”

New FBO Manager Ahmad Badreddine reinforces DWC team
Capt Raman also paid tribute to the team for all their hard work including recently appointed new FBO Manager Ahmad Badreddine, who joined the business in July and assisted with the important audit.
Ahmad brings nearly a decade of experience with a leading FBO brand to the role, together with valued previous experience in the aviation sector, where he held station manager and ground handling roles with Emirates Airlines and Dnata, looking after a variety of aviation companies.
He was also a key figure supporting Falcon Aviation’s hospitality at the recent Dubai Airshow, with responsibility extended to overseeing the logistics and handling of Air Baltic’s Bombardier C Series, making its Middle East debut in the static display. Bombardier Regional Aircraft heaped praise on Falcon for their superb handling of a highly significant showcase for them, (Falcon Aviation supplied a Bombardier Q400 in its colours alongside.)
“I am delighted to have joined Falcon Aviation at such an exciting time in the business.  The IS-BAH endorsement rounds off a brilliant year and I am looking forward to 2018 and being able to build on our loyal customer base and further attract new clients who are flying or transiting through the FBO.  We will also be incentivising clients further with discounts on connecting helicopter charters if they use our FBO and our new heliport,” he added.
Falcon Aviation offers a fast clearance, VIP service for passengers connecting from business jets to helicopters, following the opening of its heliport in April 2017.
Popular destinations like Ras Al Khaimah; Fujairah and Diba are reachable in under an hour from the VIP terminal. Open to all operators, corporates and private individuals arriving with their business jets, it is also the first in the region to facilitate quick and convenient helicopter charters between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just 30 minutes.
This winter and into the 2018 New Year Falcon’s DWC FBO will be handling flights within the GCC, Europe, the USA and luxury leisure destinations including the Maldives, Seychelles.
