Garmin has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for the GFC 500 autopilot for select Beechcraft Bonanza and Debonair aircraft. Intended for piston single-engine aircraft, the GFC 500 delivers superior in-flight characteristics, self-monitoring capabilities and minimal maintenance needs when compared to older generation autopilot systems.

New aircraft models approved for the GFC 500 autopilot include:

  • Beechcraft Bonanza/Debonair
    • Models: 33, A33, B33, C33, C33A, E33, E33A, E33C, F331, F33C1, G331

The GFC 500 autopilot uniquely integrates with the G5 electronic flight instrument or a combination of both the G5 and G500 TXi flight display to provide pilots with an economical and modern autopilot solution. The autopilot mode controller contains large dedicated keys and knobs, a control wheel that allows for easy adjustments to aircraft pitch, airspeed and vertical speed and a level button that returns the aircraft to straight-and-level flight. As a standard feature, pilots receive Garmin ESP with the GFC 500 autopilot, which works to assist the pilot in maintaining the aircraft in a stable flight condition. ESP functions independently of the autopilot and works in the background to help pilots avoid inadvertent flight attitudes or bank angles and provides airspeed protection while the pilot is hand-flying the aircraft.

In addition to traditional autopilot capabilities such as altitude hold, vertical speed and heading modes, the GFC 500 also includes:

  • Premium functions and advanced capabilities such as altitude pre-select and indicated airspeed hold mode.
  • Pilots can fly fully coupled descent Vertical Navigation (VNAV) profiles throughout the enroute and terminal phases of flight with a GTN 750/650 navigator.
  • Pilots can select, couple and fly various instrument approaches, including GPS, ILS, VOR, LOC and back course approaches.
  • Built-in GPS roll steering capability eliminates the need for external roll steering converters, allowing for smoother navigation tracking when installed with a compatible navigator.
  • Level Mode, which automatically engages the autopilot to restore the aircraft to straight and level flight.
  • Underspeed protection helps prevent the pilot from stalling the aircraft.
  • Overspeed protection helps prevent the pilot from exceeding aircraft maximum speed (VNE).
  • Pilots can fly coupled ‘go-arounds’ during missed approach sequencing. A remotely-installed go-around button commands the Flight Director to display the appropriate pitch attitude required for the missed approach procedure and activates a loaded missed approach when paired with a GTN 650/750 navigator.
  • An optional pitch-trim servo adds automatic trim and manual electric trim.
  • With the addition of an optional yaw damper servo, Yaw Damping (YD) mode minimizes yawing oscillations while also helping to maintain coordinated flight by keeping the slip/skid indicator centered.

For customers who already have a G5 electronic flight instrument, the GFC 500 starts at a suggested retail price of $6,9952 for a 2-axis autopilot. The GFC 500 can be purchased with the G5 electronic flight instrument for a suggested retail price of less than $10,0002.

In addition to these aircraft, Garmin is working on a GFC 500 STC for the F33A Bonanza and expects to complete that certification in the coming months. Garmin also continues to broaden its aircraft approval list for the GFC 600 and GFC 500 autopilots.

MSB Aerospace has completed and delivered its first set of crystal, china and flatware inserts for Waco, Texas-based L3 Integrated Aerospace Systems. The ninety-piece collection of custom-made inserts is the largest yet sourced from MSB’s state-of-the-art production facility in Savannah and is destined for installation on a head-of-state aircraft. This represents the first completed project in an ongoing collaboration between L3 Technologies’ VIP completions business area and MSB Aerospace LLC, a Sogeclair company.

The custom-made inserts, which were specified in conjunction with the L3 completion center technicians, will safeguard valuable crystal, china and flatware through all phases of flight. In addition, with so many inserts needed, the customer requested a system that enabled access to all the inserts, and their contents, with minimal noise and maximum ease. To facilitate the request, each item features a bespoke MSB-designed handle which supports easy insert egress and access.

The executive airliner cabin incorporated numerous bespoke cabinets in the galley which resulted in the need for MSB to aggregate two distinct sets of measurements to fulfill the insert order. MSB accurately measured each of the customized monuments to produce correctly fitting inserts for each space. In addition, a representative selection of each of the tableware items, which had also been custom-made, required meticulous measuring to generate precise template cutouts that were used to produce the protective inserts.

Consideration was also given to where the items will be used in the cabin, the frequency of use, and where they will be placed in the cabinets. Form, function and practicality informed the final insert layout blueprint. To meet the strict weight parameters and aviation regulations, the inserts were made of a lightweight but strong high-density foam fully certified for aviation use. The physical manufacturing of the complete set took the US-based team just twelve weeks from start to finish.

“This is the largest consignment we’ve had to fulfill since our doors opened in Savannah in January. There is no doubt that closer proximity to the client, the procurement of materials sourced in the USA, and the skills of our local US technical team supported the seamless operational success of this project,” said Robert Lodge, business development manager for MSB Aerospace.

“This initial contract with MSB has worked out well,” said Anthony Cusumano, Vice President of Head of State programs at L3 Integrated Aerospace Systems. “It is a real benefit to us, and therefore our customers, to have a US-based company that understands and fulfills our very exacting requirements.”

Airbus Helicopters is expanding its presence in the North American emergency medical services (EMS) market with the sale of six helicopters for two customers at the 2018 Air Medical Transport Conference, which took place in Phoenix, AZ from October 22-24.
“Airbus Helicopters has been supporting the air medical market in North America since its creation, and we are proud to further our partnership with customers to help save lives in the safest and most modern aircraft,” said Chris Emerson, president of Airbus Helicopters, Inc. and head of the North America region.
REACH Air Medical Services will add three H125s and two H130s to its current fleet. The new aircraft slated for delivery later this year, will allow REACH to expand its service area while modernizing its fleet. Headquartered in Sacramento, Calif., REACH is a subsidiary of Global Medical Response (GMR), which provides critical care air transport service to communities throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, Texas, and Colorado.
Also at the show, Airbus welcomed a new customer – Medical Air Rescue Company (MARC) –which signed for its first Airbus helicopter, the H130. The acquisition is part of the company’s long-term plan to modernize its fleet and expand its operations into the challenging mountainous regions in Wyoming, where the aircraft will be based. Scheduled for delivery in December, the new aircraft will help the growing organization serve roughly 2,400 patients a year across South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska and Texas.
These orders come on the heels of two milestones for the twin-engine H145 in North America’s EMS market. In March 2018, Boston MedFlight took delivery of its first of three H145s. And in 2019, the H145 will begin EMS flights in Canada for the first time with Alberta-based STARS air ambulance, which was selected as the preferred aircraft type for their fleet renewal.
Airbus Helicopters remains the leading provider of emergency medical helicopters for North American operators. In the past decade alone, nearly two-thirds of all new EMS helicopters sold in the United States were produced by Airbus Helicopters. Today, more than 90 EMS operators in North America rely on more than 1,230 Airbus helicopters for their emergency care transport needs.

Web Manuals is announcing a partnership with Advanced Safety and Quality Solutions (ASQS), a web-based safety, quality and risk management solution for the aviation, maritime and offshore sector, to save auditors hundreds of working hours every year.
The Web Manuals functionality will be integrated within ASQS’s Intuitive Quality and Safety Management System (IQSMS) to support auditors with the preparation of audits.
Martin Lidgard, CEO and founder of Web Manuals, says: “It became obvious during discussions with ASQS that an integrated solution would offer a new level of digitization for customers, and in turn, improve safety within these organizations. This is just the beginning too – further integration will allow users to pull out process compliance links and generate an audit plan, complete with requirement list, all at the touch of a button.”
The partnership will save auditors a substantial amount of time when conducting audits. This is done not only through the automated retrieval of compliance links, but also the automated cross-referencing of regulatory content in IQSMS to document references in Web Manuals. Time saved can instead be used to focus on analyzing the implementation of the audit, thus improving efficiency.
Günther Schindl, managing director at ASQS, says: “We estimate that hundreds of working hours per year will be saved for auditors, as well as 1-2 working weeks for top-level managers. Through my previous experience as a quality manager for a private jet operator, I know how time-saving this partnership will be for our customers.
“Users can now use the compliance link functionality from Web Manuals to quickly view relevant manuals within their own internal documents, and on one interface. This has made a huge improvement to our customers’ efficiency, as previously they had to manually upload documents from Web Manuals into the IQSMS software. This is feedback we took on board and implemented as part of our ongoing commitment to our customers.”
ASQS won the ‘Partner of the Year’ award at Web Manuals’ GO DIGITAL Conference in September.
