On behalf of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), President and CEO Ed Bolen today expressed the profound sadness of the staff and membership over the sudden loss of Cheri Rudd, NBAA’s longtime manager for office coordination, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this week.
“We at NBAA are heartbroken to have lost our friend and colleague, Cheri Rudd,” said Bolen. “Cheri was an extraordinary human being and a true professional. For as long as I can remember, Cheri has been the voice of NBAA, and the first point of contact for many association members. She greeted everyone – either on the phone or in person – with a warmth, grace and level of expertise that was both reassuring and welcoming.”
Rudd joined NBAA as a receptionist in 1990 after serving in similar positions with several Washington, DC firms. She quickly became known by everyone associated with NBAA as a reliable resource who possessed superior customer-service skills. If she did not know the answer to someone’s question, she knew where to get it.
Rudd was one of the first NBAA employees inducted into the association’s Order of the Orange Crate, which recognizes staff members who make NBAA a great organization.
NBAA extended its sympathies to Rudd’s surviving family members, including her daughter, Melanie, and grandchildren. Plans for a memorial service have not yet been finalized.

Jet Aviation has completed the refurbishment of its new Boston/Bedford FBO with a contemporary “cozy chic” style designed to be comfortable and attractive for customers – and is delivering even more customer service by housing a new Duncan Aviation satellite avionics shop in a hangar.

“We’ve applied a new, warmer color scheme and some new wall coverings, in addition to replacing all of the temporary furnishings, décor and design elements that were here when we opened the new FBO last year,” said FBO Director of Services Pam Day. “We changed the feel and the experience of the FBO. It’s more modern, but still cozy and comfortable. And some of the accents pieces are kind of funky and that’s a fun touch. We call it ‘cozy chic,’ and we’re inviting all of our customers to come in and enjoy the new look.”

The FBO features 30,000 square feet over two stories, with two customer lounge areas, two pilot shower rooms, a snooze room, a pilots’ lounge with two privacy rooms and two conference rooms with full video-conferencing capabilities.

It opened last year shortly after the dedication of the new 40,000 square-foot hangar that can handle aircraft up to Gulfstream G650 and Global 7000. It brings total hangar space to more than 124,000 square feet and total facility space to more than 360,000 square feet.
The facility also has 80,000 square feet of remote, private parking. The location at Hanscom Field just outside of Boston offers easy access to local attractions.

“Our focus on customer service means not only a new style and comfort for customers in the FBO, but also adding a great, valuable new service through locating a new Duncan Aviation satellite avionics shop in our hangar,” said Pam Day, director of FBO Services at Boston/Bedford

Jet Aviation is exhibiting at NBBA-BACE in Orlando from October 16 – 18, 2018. Please take the time to visit our Jet Aviation booth (#274).

This year at NBAA’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition, Rockwell Collins will showcase a new web-based business jet passenger portal featuring Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), an application for streaming live television over an internet connection. The new offering is on display in the company’s cabin experience demonstration at booth #228.

IPTV is the first of many apps that will be available via the new passenger portal to provide passengers with access to more entertainment and productivity tools. In addition, the IPTV can be managed remotely from the ground to control and optimize the connectivity of each device onboard and provide passengers with a better experience in the air. Some of the features include:
• multiple simultaneous users can watch live TV globally;
• individual channels may be multicast onboard to multiple devices, utilizing only a single broadband connection;
• the bandwidth for each channel can be optimized to enable business jet operators to control cabin data usage and utilize less bandwidth than standard streaming apps;
• operators have the option to select a standard definition or high definition broadcast for each IPTV channel for each aircraft.

“Our solution provides operators streaming TV content without the need to install a TV antenna on their aircraft,” said Kim Pendergast, director, ARINCDirect Cabin Services for Rockwell Collins. “It doesn’t matter what connectivity service is enabled, whether it is a high throughput satellite service or swift broadband, we can provide an IPTV solution globally, wherever the aircraft has an active ARINCDirect broadband service.”

A coalition of international aviation organizations announced an upcoming event to reaffirm the general aviation industry’s commitment to advancing the development and adoption of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF).

The event – Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability, scheduled for January 17, 2019, at the Van Nuys Airport in Southern California– will demonstrate that SAJF can become a mainstream, drop-in alternative for today’s general aviation aircraft. Jet fuel blended with SAJF will be available for use across the airport during the event, as operators fuel up and fly with the sustainable product – VNY’s four fixed-based operators (FBOs) have collaborated to participate in this initiative.

Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability follows the May 2018 release of the “Business Aviation Guide to the Use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF)” at the 2018 European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE2018), and a joint declaration by several leading general aviation organizations to promote the development of SAJF.

The release of the guide, the upcoming airport initiative and other efforts reflect the industry’s long-standing commitment to emissions reduction, including, among other aims, carbon neutrality from 2020 forward.

UNIVERSAL AVIONICS & HELI-ONE COMPLETE TRANSITION TO HOVER CERTIFICATION TESTING
Universal Avionics (UA) announces completion of certification testing with Authorized Dealer, Heli-One, for the company’s Flight Management System (FMS) Transition to Hover feature. Testing occurred in Stavanger, Norway with a law enforcement AS332L/L1 Super Puma helicopter modernization program. Certification is now imminent.
The new UA FMS feature allows a hands-free operation for the crew, allowing them to focus on other mission critical tactics. The pilot-friendly interface provides for an automatic approach based on a pilot Mark-on-Target activation. When activated, the FMS computes and provides coupled guidance downwind, performs an automatic course reversal, and communicates with the CDV-155 AFCS to trigger the descent and deceleration to achieve a hover 100 meters downwind of the target. At that point, the helicopter enters an automatic hover at the pilot-selected altitude.
“The Transition to Hover feature is an important addition to the FMS/Multi-Missions Management System (MMMS) for SAR capabilities,” said Grady Dees, UA Director of Technical Sales. “The UA UNS-1Fw MMMS provides the helicopter with multiple pre-programmed search patterns,” he added. “It’s a must-have feature for any AS332L/L1 crew engaged in overwater SAR operations. When, during a search, the crew spots survivors in the water, the automatic Transition to Hover allows for a stabilized and precise pattern to approach the survivors for rescue.”
“The Transition to Hover feature is a valuable tool for crews and can heavily benefit search and rescue missions,” said Tor Baustad, Heli-One Senior Manager, Design Engineering Heli-One. “This solution was developed by Universal Avionics as they continue to enhance their Flight Management Systems, adding great mission value for operators. We are pleased to collaborate with them and to work with our customers to bring these solutions to operational capability.”
For more information, visit UA booth G51 during the Helitech International Helicopter Expo & Conference.
