FTI Engineering Network GmbH received a “Supplemental Type Certificate” (STC) to retrofit all Cessna Citation CJs with the new transponder technology in exclusive cooperation with Atlas Air Service AG.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) prescribed the retrofitting to the air surveillance technology “Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast” (ADS-B) by 2020. Any aircraft must be actively traceable by means of GPS-based aircraft data according to the provisions of the aviation authorities.

“We now offer this ADS-B Out retrofit including EASA approval – and also FAA approval in the future – to all owners of CJ1+, CJ2+ and CJ3 Jets with ProLine 21 avionics worldwide”, states Gregor Bremer, Chief Technology Officer of Atlas Air Service. “This exclusive service at our business sites in Bremen, Paderborn and Augsburg fills us with particular pride. First client jets have already been retrofitted with this new technology.”

Moreover, Atlas Air Service also offers solutions for ADS-B out modifications for all other aircraft according to its maintenance list. This is partly implemented with manufacturer SBs or STCs by other suppliers.

In conjunction with the rollout of its 4G LTE-based network, SmartSky Networks recently enabled multiple subject matter experts to experience, firsthand, the unmatched power of its patented inflight connectivity during flights on its Cessna Citation Excel in the skies above Las Vegas. A number of OEMs, MROs, potential partners and Early Bird customers attending the National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) attempted to push the system to its limits, and in the process, learned that SmartSky 4G LTE is the only system capable of delivering multi-Gigabyte per hour data rates inflight, bi-directionally and with low latency, effectively redefining what it means to be able to stream, chat and text in real-time onboard a business jet.

“I experienced how SmartSky enables a strong level of productivity on a plane with a sizable passenger load,” says Scott Brooks, Director of Avionics Solutions for Pentastar Aviation. “It gives you the ability to pull PowerPoint presentations to the aircraft, conduct video-streaming calls without latency, buffering or interruptions to service. The SmartSky system will be a game changer for business aviation, allowing companies that depend on being able to conduct business while in the air the ability to do so efficiently, regardless of the amount of passengers on board.”

A comprehensive analysis of the data operations during the demonstration flights confirmed SmartSky 4G LTE’s unrivaled speed and capacity. Over three days, passengers on 12 flights experienced:
• Multi-GB per hour actual data throughput consistently on each flight.
• Actual peak speeds well in excess of 10 Mbps, with individually run speed tests showing high multi-Mbps bidirectional data rates, as well.
• Average return link traffic representing nearly 25 percent of the data, with one flight pushing 46 percent of its data off the plane. No other inflight connectivity network supports these crucially needed ratios to run the popular applications customers expect to use. Without SmartSky 4G LTE’s return link and low latency, customers are limited to the few applications other networks support.
• Average of more than 50 seamless beam handovers per flight, proving the most difficult engineering aspect of the system works, and demonstrating the system’s inherent scalability.

SmartSky demonstrated capabilities previously difficult or impossible to consistently achieve on either the incumbent’s ATG network or new satellite systems, such as conducting a live WebEx, or quickly sending large PowerPoint files, all while other onboard passengers were doing multiple streaming sessions. The innovative beamforming power of the network enables bi-directional live communications, at speeds that match Wi-Fi on the ground.

Sheltair, one of the nation’s leading privately-owned aviation development companies, is partnering up with a four-wheeled friend for a good cause: Racing for Cancer, which was formed to unite motorsports fans around the world to help those afflicted with cancer and to promote early detection and prevention initiatives that support the global fight against cancer.

On October 31, all 17 Sheltair locations will donate 10 cents per gallon of every Jet A retail fuel sale to the cause. The corporation will present the donation to Racing for Cancer ambassador and Indy 500 winner, Gil deFerran, at its annual Wings Wheels Water event on November 1 at Sheltair FLL.

The event kicks off the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) and will feature the IndyCar of Racing for Cancer founder and winningest American IndyCar driver—Ryan Hunter-Reay—on display along with luxury aircraft, vehicles and watercraft.

“Racing for Cancer is an exceptional cause,” said Karen Kroeppel, director of sales and marketing for Sheltair. “We are thrilled to work together as a network and with our pilot customers to raise funds to assist in the fight against cancer. To then be able to host deFerran at our event along with Hunter-Reay’s IndyCar is truly special. Our hope is the additional exposure will help promote awareness for the Racing for Cancer team.”

Sheltair has hosted the annual Wings Wheels Water event for nearly 20 years, entertaining guests from around the world headed to Fort Lauderdale’s FLIBS, November 1 – 5, and welcoming residents back to South Florida for the winter season. In September Aero-Dienst Nuremberg has completed the first of three Dassault Falcon 7X C inspections. Intensive planning and the thorough performance of the first two consecutive C inspections guarantee the experienced Falcon operator and long-term customer Shell a high degree of fleet availability. A third C-inspection is now scheduled for another 7X operator at the beginning of 2018.

Aero-Dienst used the downtime to carry out several tasks in parallel: “In addition to classic cabin and cockpit overhauls, we installed a quick access recorder (QAR) based on a new STC”, says Thomas Opelt, Aero-Dienst’s Maintenance Avionics Manager.

The aircraft has undergone extensive modifications such as the implementation of a new comprehensive Demo Service Bulletin for the fuel tank. The top-class and highly experienced Aero-Dienst team plays out its strengths especially in the more demanding tasks, such as work on ‘restricted areas’ (fuel tank). “We do this professionally and to the highest possible quality standards. And this includes the strict HSSE requirements (Health, Safety, Security, Environment), ensuring that we discharge our obligations as a responsible employer”, confirms Florian Heinzelmann, Dassault Maintenance Manager at Aero-Dienst.

For Aero-Dienst it is always top priority to adhere to the planned servicing schedule so that customers can make best possible use of their fleet. That is why the full-service provider from Nuremberg started detailed inter-departmental planning involving Maintenance Planning, Design & Modification and Avionics as early as three months before the Falcon 7X arrived.

Especially with complex projects such as this one, Aero-Dienst appreciates the outstanding cooperation with the manufacturer Dassault. “Basically, all three of the participating partners, Shell, Dassault and Aero-Dienst, benefit from the direct and open communication that is required to carry out this event successfully and to the customer’s full satisfaction”, concludes Florian Heinzelmann.

Air BP has announced the sponsorship of the new Collections Care Technician (CCT) post at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum, London. The CCT role involves the upkeep of the RAF’s heritage collection of over 100 aircraft from WWI and WWII, including the Spitfire and Lancaster. The sponsorship is a vitally important and integral contribution for the RAF Museum, which takes on even greater emphasis next year (2018) as the London site undergoes a major transformation coinciding with the centenary of the Royal Air Force.

Air BP’s co-operation with the RAF builds on a relationship of eight decades, which started with Air BP providing fuel to the RAF’s bi-planes. “We recognise the importance of the CCT role at the RAF Museum and by extension we are pleased to be supporting the Centenary programme. BP’s education programme in the UK is all about inspiring young people to gain a better understanding of how important the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) are for our industry and for their futures. Sponsoring aviation roles like this one and our Sterling Pilot PPL (Private Pilot’s Licence) scholarships demonstrates how Air BP is bringing this education agenda to life in the aviation industry,” said Elena Melia, general manager, Air BP UK and France.

The CCT role supports the museum by providing critical inspection, maintenance, movement and repair of the Museum’s aircraft, marine craft and vehicles. The CCT embarked on his engineering training at RAF Hendon under an apprentice programme led by the Museum’s senior RAF technician. As his role evolves he will also be able to call on the support of Neil Frances, operations manager, Air BP UK and France, to provide advice and technical assistance.

“We are hugely grateful for Air BP’s involvement,” said RAF Museum CEO, Maggie Appleton. “Corporate sponsorship is really important to us because the RAF Centenary programme not only covers a major refurbishment of the site but also includes a digital project, My RAF Story. It also includes initiatives aimed at helping young people access skills and training for an aviation career plus the new aircraft collection. The total investment commitment is £25.6 million. Without sponsorship it just wouldn’t happen.”

The collections care technician commented: “The majority of the aircraft here are static exhibitions and they require constant maintenance. Many young people may not be familiar with these aircraft, but in 10 years’ time when the number of veterans drops, these exhibitions will be crucial to tell the stories.”

Air BP has supported the RAF since the early 1930s. There is a record in the company’s 1927 Annual Report of supplying fuel to RAF aircraft, including a twin-engined Vickers Victoria which escorted an inaugural Imperial Airways’ flight through the Middle East with the Air Minister on board.

The transformed London Museum will welcome visitors to discover a new green heart of the community in Colindale, reflecting the Historic RAF Hendon Airfield. Innovative new galleries will explore the first 100 years of the RAF, its role today and invite visitors to imagine its future contribution and technology. It will also feature a new dedicated learning centre with significant STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning programmes.

UK-based flight planning specialist Signum Aviation has become the latest company to install Osprey Flight Solutions’ risk analysis and management solution.

The Osprey Flight Risk Assessment System provides operators, such as Signum Aviation, with the ability to instantaneously risk assess every single flight through their own flight planning tools. It provides auditable reports on flights and risk areas to meet compliance requirements and comprehensive email alerts to inform operators about global incidents and events that impact the aviation security environment.

Using Osprey’s cost-effective real-time service, Signum Aviation will benefit from the processing of a huge amount of data (200,000 sources in over 60 languages), all filtered and validated to provide the maximum accuracy, speed and consistency in security analysis.

Osprey will officially launch its new service at the 2017 AVSEC World event in Abu Dhabi next week with gold sponsor status. (14th to 16th November.)

Prior to a formal agreement between the two companies, Signum Aviation has been beta-testing Osprey’s solution these past few months. With its US and European customers requesting in-depth information for compiling risk assessments for upcoming missions either to or overflying Africa, the Middle East or Central and South America, Signum describes Osprey’s offering as an important and essential extension to their service.

Jonathan Gill, Managing Director and Founder of Signum Aviation, explains, “Osprey’s offering is impressively robust. It delivers reliable data and addresses the increasing need for our company to provide on-demand security information to our customers.

“The last 12 months have been our best year to date, and we look forward to the growth which will no doubt come as a result of our investment in cutting-edge software,” Jonathan Gill added.

“We are delighted that such an agile new company sees the inherent value in Osprey Flight Solutions,” stated Andrew Nicholson, Osprey’s CEO. “As the only fully inclusive risk management system for the aviation industry, we look forward to playing a significant role securing the safe and successful operations of Signum Aviation.”

Helicopteres Guimbal has announced yet another significant milestone that keeps the Cabri G2 at the front of the pack for being the most advanced and safest trainer on the market. Helicopteres Guimbal has announced yet another significant milestone that keeps the Cabri G2 at the front of the pack for being the most advanced and safest trainer on the market.

The FAA has approved Service Bulletin 17-009 that allows the pilot to use additional horsepower from the aircraft’s Lycoming 0360-J2A. Previously the allowed power had been 145 horsepower. The new rating allows the pilot to utilize 160 horsepower without any negative implications to operating costs or additional inspections.

Operators, whom have predominantly been flight schools in the USA, have anxiously been awaiting this approval. Chris Bailey of Midwest Helicopters whom operates four Cabris with more planned to come in 2018 states, “The Cabri has been a safe and reliable training platform for our school. With the new Bulletin, the additional power will further enhance the margins of safety we’ve come to rely on.”

Once operators have downloaded the new software into the aircrafts EPM (similar to the Airbus VEMD) the pilots are quoted saying, “It is a different aircraft coming out or into a tight landing area.” “So Good!” “It’s now a mini Astar B3.”

Guimbal’s USA distributor, Precision Helicopters will soon be closing out with their best year of Cabri G2 sales thus far. “Bruno Guimbal just keeps making the already impressive aircraft better. Needless to say, we are very happy with this new feature,” says David Rath, Precision’s Managing Director.

The Cabri G2 now has nearly 140,000 flight hours on the fleet worldwide with no serious injuries occurring to date. The 200th aircraft was delivered this year and aircraft number 215 is in production now. Over 10% of the fleet has made their way to the USA since its certification by the FAA in 2015. The aircraft remains arguably the safest small helicopter despite the aircraft predominately being used in the strenuous training environments globally.

Quest Aircraft Company has announced a new joint venture agreement between Quest parent company Setouchi Holdings, Inc and the Maldives-based company Island Aviation Services Ltd. The agreement establishes a new seaplane operation, Sky Atoll Private Ltd, and an initial order of four Kodiak 100s has been placed to kickstart the new program.

Made up of roughly 1,200 coral islands, the Republic of Maldives is world renowned for its “one island, one resort” ultra-luxury resorts, and each year continues to draw a growing number of tourists from around the world. Seaplanes are the primary means by which tourists travel to each resort from the international airport through which they enter the country, and the scale of seaplane operations is among the largest in the world.

The Kodiaks being delivered to Sky Atoll Private will be utilizing the Aerocet 6750 straight floats, which were certified on the aircraft earlier in 2017. The Kodiak 100 is available with either straight or amphibious Aerocet composite floats. Thanks to its original design parameters, the Kodiak does not require any structural changes or aerodynamic fixes for float operations, which in turn makes it a highly stable seaplane. It’s also the fastest seaplane once airborne, cruising at 162 ktas.

“We are pleased that after a rigorous operational evaluation in the Maldives the Kodiak proved that its robust construction and short field performance made it the ideal aircraft Island Air Service’s single-engine float operations,” said Rob Wells, CEO of Quest Aircraft Company.

Island Aviation Services Ltd is a state-run airline established by the government of the Maldives in 2000. It operates both domestic and international flights under the Maldivian brand name, and also operates seaplanes.

Avfuel announces Glen Rutland of Shoreline Aviation Services—a corporate aircraft management and consulting company—as the lucky pilot who won a Rolex in the Avfuel booth at the 2017 National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition held in Las Vegas this October.
Rutland was randomly drawn from a pool of hundreds of people who participated in Get Referred. Get Fancy. Attendees earned chances to win their choice of jewelry by visiting Avfuel’s booth and getting referred through its network of co-exhibiting FBOs—a spinoff of Avfuel’s newest program, Avfuel Network Referrals.
“I’ve been a customer of Avfuel’s for about 20 years and their team always provides such quality service,” said Rutland. “I conduct business with many of Avfuel’s co-exhibiting branded FBOs and have bought a lot of jet fuel from them. So when I was visiting the Avfuel booth, I wasn’t there to win a prize, but figured I’d throw my hat in while I was there! I was totally floored, totally surprised, when I found out I had won—and what I had won! I sure appreciate the nice gift and also appreciate the great service Avfuel provides for all of its customers.”
Of this year’s promotion, Marci Ammerman, vice president of marketing for Avfuel, said, “Traffic at the convention this year was great. Our booth was full of valued customers and quality prospects. While the promotion helped draw them into the booth, many attendees—like Mr. Rutland—were interested in learning more about the Avfuel Network and the array of aviation solutions we provide. It’s always fun to catch up with friends, old and new.”
