The two U.S. students participating in this year’s “Young Eagles” summer internship program co-sponsored by DAHER-SOCATA and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) detailed their trans-Atlantic experience with the international aviation industry during a press conference at the EAA’s 2009 AirVenture fly-in.
SOCATA NA President Nicolas Chabbert introduced Karl Parsons and Irene Trujillo, whose Young Eagles activity included working at DAHER-SOCATA’s headquarters and production facility in Tarbes, France, visiting the 2009 Paris Air Show, and touring the Airbus A380 final assembly line at in Toulouse, France.
“The internship was a great experience. The opportunity to discover the aviation industry from such a unique perspective will be extremely beneficial wherever I go in today’s global workplace,” said Parsons, who is from Prescott, Arizona, and was assigned to DAHER-SOCATA’s engineering department in charge of investigating potential retrofit applications for the TBM 700.
“This internship went beyond my expectations; Not only did it introduce me to the many opportunities offered by the aviation industry it gave me a valuable cross-cultue experience. ” explained Trujillo. “I was struck by the sense of community within the company. It's important to know the people you’re working with, even in a company with over 1,000 employees. It was also an excellent opportunity to see the amount of work that goes into manufacturing an aircraft from start to finish, and all of the follow-up needed to keep the fleet in service.”
She worked on a customer service development project at the DAHER-SOCATA Customer Services department, and is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Nicolas Chabbert, the president of SOCATA North America, said DAHER-SOCATA is committed to providing a valuable experience for the internship program’s participants, and is dedicated to continuing its Young Eagles partnership with the Experimental Aircraft Association.
“Our ambition is to make a difference for the future of the interns who are welcomed to our company each year, and who have the opportunity to interact with SOCATA employees for a unique cultural exchange,” Chabbert explained.
The Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to provide general aviation experience for students interested in an aviation career. This activity is offered free of charge, and is made possible by the generosity of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s members, its volunteers and corporations.
In the Young Eagles activity supported by DAHER-SOCATA, students travel from the U.S. to France for a multi-week assignment at the company’s Tarbes facility – where they gain experience in an area of their choice, such as marketing, production, management, design, support or service.
“DAHER-SOCATA’s commitment to this scholarship program is exemplary,” said Elissa Lines, the Experimental Aircraft Association’s vice president of development. “It provides an incentive and a challenge to our Young Eagles, along with the opportunity to explore a variety of career directions within the aviation field to see what the future holds. For a student, nothing is more important.”
